Get Rid of Fleas
10 Natural Flea Treatment Remedies

get rid of fleas

This is Poppy. She likes to help me when I research natural products.  We make homemade doggie treats. She eats coconut oil to stay healthy,  and this week, she got fleas...and she's so embarrassed!  So, in the spirit of research, we started learning how to get rid of fleas.

Fleas on dogs can lead to a discouraging day.

My first step was to shave her down as close as possible.  If the fleas weren't embarrassing enough, she felt that the haircut was humiliating!  (I thought her unibrow needed trimming anyway.)  Then I embarked on a little bit of each of the following hints.

Please consult your vet if you have any concerns about the methods I'm sharing on getting rid of fleas.

Get Rid of Fleas

1. Bathe your puppy using dawn dish detergent.  Fill the bathtub as full as you can so the water will be as high as possible on your dog.  Add a mixture of 1/2 C vinegar and 1/2 C dawn dish detergent and soak your pet for a few minutes.  Then suds her up and rinse thoroughly.  I added a couple of drops of tea tree oil to the water for an added benefit for your natural flea control.  You'll see the fleas floating in the bathwater-finish up with a nice combing with a flea comb.

(this part is icky but very important-before you put your dog into the water, suds up her bottom and around her ears with the dish soap.  The fleas will try to escape the water and flee into various spaces so we want to protect them)

2. Another hint to get rid of fleas is a natural spray mixture.  Fill a spray bottle with 3 parts water and 1 part white vinegar.  Once again, I added a couple of drops of tea tree oil because of it's amazing health benefits.  You can mist this lightly on your dog as well as using it on couches, pillows and any area that your pet may sleep.

Make sure that the oil you use is from a reputable source, always dilute it, avoid the eyes and never use tea tree oil on cats.

3. Smearing a patch of vaseline on the back of your pets neck-in a spot that they can't reach to lick off-is an effective flea treatment.  This will work to continue to catch any stray fleas that may have temporarily survived.  If you're like me and choose to stay away from petroleum jelly, it's very easy to make your own vaseline.

4. You don't have to throw all of your dog's bedding away!  Simply put all of the toys, bedding and pillows into the washing machine and dryer.  30 minutes in the heated dryer will get rid of fleas by killing the adults, eggs and the larvae.

....................................

5.  Spice up your collar!  Take your pet's collar and add a few drops of tea tree oil, citronella or lavender.  The essential oils act as natural flea control because they are repelled by the scent.  Bonus...your dog may rest easier with the relaxing lavender benefits.

6.  Fleas will thrive on your furniture and carpets as well as your 4-legged friend.  Use your dawn dish detergent and water to wash off all furniture (test a small corner if you're concerned) wash your floors and use a small amount to clean your carpets and get rid of fleas.  Not too much-you don't need a sudsy mess at this point!

7.  Salt is your cheapest, best friend!  Salt is an effective flea treatment as it will kill the flea's eggs by drying them out.  Use a fin-grained salt as the finer it is, the easier it is for the salt to attach to the flea. Sprinkle the sale over your furniture, affected carpet areas and bedding areas.  Leave for 2-3 days then vacuum thoroughly.  When done, throw your vacuum bag away inside an airtight trash bag.  Repeat weekly until the fleas are gone.

8. Another natural flea control hint is to make a rosemary bath tea. Boil 2 cups of fresh rosemary in 4 cups of water.  After you've boiled it for 1/2 hour, strain and add to a gallon of water.  Pour over your pet to soak her.  Let her air dry-this is a safe way to use the benefits of essential oils without worrying about it getting too strong for her.

9.  Make a citrus spray out of lemon & water for your natural flea treatment..  Add lemon pieces to 2 cups of water and heat to boiling. Let the lemon infuse into the water overnight and then spray it everywhere that you suspect the fleas.  Be careful on furniture, you don't want it to stain.  Gently mist and rub into your dog's fur and tummy areas.

......................................

10. Now, the final flea treatment that I found sounds crazy...just so crazy that it actually works!  Lay banana peels on the places that you suspect are infested with fleas.  Place them with the inside up on your couches, floors and carpets.  The fleas are drawn to the bananas but they are poisonous to them.  In a few days you'll see dead fleas covering the banana peels.  Icky...but true!
